Selko Piggery
A small (500 sow), industry-standard, farrow to finish piggery just outside of Narrandera NSW. Group housing - no sow stalls.
Numerous dead and dying piglets were found, and sows with injuries on their teats. Unlike most piggeries however, it appears that the tails of the piglets are not cut off.
Layout: the piggery comprises six sheds laid out in an east-west direction. Each shed has a specific function, and pigs move through each shed from farrowing to finishing. As well, there are dry sow holding areas. Each shed has an east and a west wing, each of which have underfloor effluent drains which fall to a central main drain leading to a sump which is pumped to the first of two effluent ponds.
As of June 2014, the piggery is up for sale at www.piggeryforsale.com.
Selko Piggery was the first to be exposed as part of Aussie Farms' response to the pig industry's self-declared "National Bacon Week" 2014.
