On February 11th 2024, hidden cameras installed by investigators from FTP at a Victorian piggery caught a worker r*ping a female pig (sow) who was confined in a farrowing crate.

Just minutes after others have left the building and the lights have been turned off, the worker is seen approaching the sow and beginning to penetrate her with his hands. He then pulls down his pants, penetrates her with his penis and proceeds to r*pe her.

This horrific act should never have happened, and we need urgent action from the government to make sure it never happens again. Use our template email below to demand change.

Dear Ms Allan, Ms Spence, Ms Andrae and Mr Tatham,
I am joining others to write to you in response to the incredibly disturbing <a href="https://www.farmtransparency.org/videos?id=9gx8cq1k13">footage released this week</a> by Farm Transparency Project of a worker raping a caged, female sow inside a Victorian piggery. If you haven’t seen it already, the footage shows a worker penetrating a sow with his fingers and penis and proceeding to rape her for several minutes, while she is confined to a farrowing crate. 
Like many others, I was shocked, horrified and deeply sickened by this footage and by the fact that this act happened on a Victorian pig farm in the midst of a Victorian Parliamentary Inquiry into pig welfare. Given the government’s recent dismissal of the findings of its own inquiry into duck shooting, I have little faith that any of the recommendations made as part of this inquiry will be followed. I hope that your response to this horrific crime will prove me wrong. 
While what happened to this pig was the actions of a deeply disturbed individual, it could only happen because of conditions that are inherent to the Australian pig meat industry. I support FTP's demands that the government urgently implement the following measures to ensure something like this can never happen again:
Introduce mandatory, publicly accessible CCTV in all Victorian farms and slaughterhouses
If it weren’t for the work of investigators installing covert cameras to capture animal cruelty, this depraved act may have never been discovered. All facilities that breed, confine and kill animals should have publicly accessible CCTV installed to allow complete transparency of their operations and to prevent what we have uncovered from ever happening again. 
Ban the use of sow stalls and farrowing crates in Victorian piggeries
The extreme confinement of pigs has been long protested as one of the most clear forms of animal abuse which is still legal in Australia. This new footage shows exactly how vulnerable these sows are while they are kept for weeks inside cages barely bigger than their own bodies. The Australian pork industry has shown that they have no capacity to enforce a self-imposed ban. The government must urgently step in and ban these cruel contraptions for good. 
Throw out the proposed new biosecurity bill
The government has recently introduced a new biosecurity bill which introduces increased penalties for animal cruelty whistleblowers who enter farms and slaughterhouses and capture footage of animal cruelty. This new bill has nothing to do with biosecurity. It is an attempt to protect the secrecy of animal slaughter industries and will act to prevent investigations like the one that uncovered this sickening act. 
Remove outdated exemptions from the Crimes Act which allow the sexual penetration of animals for purposes of animal agriculture
What was done to this pig may not have happened if the sexual exploitation of animals wasn’t normalised in Australian animal farming. On commercial piggeries, workers, just like the man we caught on camera, are expected to forcefully inseminate female pigs by rubbing their vulva to encourage arousal and then inserting a tube filled with semen into their vagina. This act would be considered bestiality if it wasn’t covered by an exemption. 
The current laws also do not cover any non-penetrative sexual abuse of animals, a severe omission which must be urgently changed. 
If workers were not legally allowed to sexually manipulate and exploit farmed animals, the illegal rape of this pig may never have happened. 
In the past, when evidence of animal abuse has been uncovered, the government has cowed into inaction by the lobbying powers of industry bodies, such as Australian Pork Limited and the Victorian Farmers Federation (cc’d). I hope that, this time, you do the right thing by vulnerable farmed animals and act quickly.
