HUNDREDS of pigs have been killed in a fire at the Boen Boe piggery at Joadja in the Southern Highlands.

FIRE crews were called to the blaze near Bowral at 10am this morning.

Crews battled the blaze for three hours before it was contained, when responsibility was handed to NSW Police.

NSW Rural Fire Service inspector David Bartlett said a number of sheds at the piggery were lost.

"A number of those sheds were deemed a 100 per cent loss," he said.

"A number of livestock (pigs) were lost due in the fire as well. I don’t know exact figures but it is in the hundreds."

NSW RFS said up to 250 pigs were estimated to have perished.

NSW Department of Primary Industry vets are currently on the scene.

NSW Police and NSW RFS are working to determine the cause of the blaze.
