Student Dissection

She was injected with reproductive hormones and gassed the following morning. Her life was taken so that students could examine her reproductive anatomy. I often hear the phrase "they gave their lives to science" in reference to animals used for teaching purposes. This implies that the animals who are killed for teaching purposes willingly donate their lives for the sake of education. I think a more fitting phrase would be "their life was taken for the sake of science". I also often hear teachers state that students must show "respect" to these animals who "gave their life to science". However, I fail to see the respect in breeding someone into existence only to kill them, then dissect them, and throw them in the garbage when finished. Numerous studies have shown that using alternatives such as computer simulations and high-quality videos offer equivalent, if not better educational outcomes (references: tinyurl.com/ybg5fz64 and tinyurl.com/y78mrzst). If alternative teaching methods have been shown to offer equivalent, if not better results for students, why are animals still being used as teaching objects?
