Beaten with poles, thrown on conveyor belts and grabbed by the tail as they try to escape: Shocking footage shows calves' distressing final moments before they are slaughtered
Abattoir workers could be charged with animal cruelty after disturbing footage emerged of calves being beaten before they were slaughtered.
Video shot at Tasmanian Quality Meats in Cressy, Tasmania, allegedly showed calves being beaten until they collapsed and hit with poly pipes.
They also appeared to be thrown to the ground and conveyor belts by their ears, tail or head alone, and pulled backwards by their tails as they tried to escape.
The RSPCA said the workers' action were cruel and distressing, and in many cases would have caused the calves significant pain and injury before death.
'It demonstrates a complete disregard for the welfare of the animals and their capacity to suffer,' the organisation said.
